Concrete Patios: Finishes, Layouts, and What They Cost to Maintain
· 5 min read

A concrete patio is one of the few home upgrades that adds usable square footage for a fraction of what an addition costs. The finish you pick changes both the look and how much upkeep you sign up for.
Broom finish
The workhorse. Light texture for traction, lowest cost, and easy to repair or extend later. It suits walkways, pool surrounds, and anywhere that gets wet.
Stamped and colored
Stamped concrete mimics stone or brick at a lower installed cost than pavers, with no joints for weeds. It needs resealing every few years to keep the color from fading, and repairs are harder to blend.
Exposed aggregate
The top paste is washed away to reveal the stone. Very durable, excellent grip, and it hides dirt well — a good choice for driveways that double as gathering space.
Layout and joints
Plan the joint pattern before the pour so control joints line up with the patio's edges and any columns or posts. Good joint layout is the difference between a patio that looks designed and one that looks cracked.
