What asphalt paving involves

Asphalt paving is a layered system, not just a black surface. The subgrade is shaped and compacted, a crushed stone base is placed to the depth the traffic calls for, and hot-mix asphalt is laid and rolled while it is still at temperature. When any one of those layers is short, the surface telegraphs it within a couple of Georgia summers.

Schell Asphalt & Concrete handles asphalt paving across Atlanta and the surrounding metro area — new construction, full-depth replacement, resurfacing over sound existing pavement, and repair of failed sections. We look at drainage first, because standing water is what turns a small crack into a pothole on Georgia's red clay subgrades.

Benefits

  • Faster to install and open to traffic than concrete
  • Flexible surface that tolerates Georgia's freeze-thaw and heat cycles
  • Easy to patch, resurface, and sealcoat over its life
  • Smooth, quiet ride surface for driveways and access roads
  • Cost-effective for large areas like parking lots and private roads

Typical project process

  1. 01

    Site visit and measurement

We walk the property, measure the area, check drainage and existing base, and talk through what the surface has to carry.

  2. 02

    Written estimate

You get a written scope: depth of base, depth of asphalt, tie-in details, and what is and isn't included. No charge, no pressure.

  3. 03

    Demolition and grading

Failed pavement is removed, the subgrade is shaped to drain, and soft spots are dug out and stabilized.

  4. 04

    Base placement and compaction

Crushed aggregate base is placed to spec and compacted in lifts so the asphalt has something solid to sit on.

  5. 05

    Paving and compaction

Hot-mix asphalt is placed and rolled while at temperature for proper density and a tight, sealed surface.

  6. 06

    Cleanup and walkthrough

We clean up the site, review cure and traffic timing with you, and go over how to care for the new surface.

Asphalt Paving across Metro Atlanta

We provide asphalt paving in the City of Atlanta and throughout the surrounding metro area. Georgia's red clay subgrade, heavy summer downpours, and long stretches of direct sun all shape how a surface is built here — which is why we start with drainage and base rather than with the finished surface.

Asphalt Paving FAQs

›What does asphalt paving cost in Atlanta?

Cost depends on square footage, access, how much of the existing surface has to come out, base depth, and drainage work. We do not quote a price online — we measure on site and give you a written number. Estimates are free.

›How long does an asphalt driveway or parking lot last?

Service life depends on base quality, drainage, traffic weight, and maintenance. Pavement that drains well and is sealcoated and crack-filled on a regular schedule lasts considerably longer than pavement that is left alone.

›Can you pave over my existing asphalt?

Sometimes. If the base is sound and the surface has no widespread structural failure, a resurface (overlay) is often a good option. If the base has failed, an overlay just hides the problem. We tell you which one you have after looking at it.

›How soon can I drive on new asphalt?

New asphalt needs time to cool and cure. We give you specific timing for your job at the walkthrough, including when to keep heavy vehicles and sharp turns off the surface.
